EDUCATION
Education is a key element in LJC's mission. Lakeshore Jazz Connnection has sponsored music in our local schools including Jazzistry at Saugatuck High School, Guy Louis and Chataqua Express at Douglas Elementary School and Dede Sampaio's Brazilian Percussion Workshop at Fennville High School. More is being planned including free music lessons, scholarships for talented music students and jazz workshops. Shown below are some events LJC sponsored during its earlier days.
“The study of American history in school is where students learn about the people in this country’s desire to be independent and to be free to express their American identity. The history of the uniquely American art form of Jazz is also a study of freedom. The freedom to express one’s feelings through music. Nearly all of the other genres of modern music originate from Jazz and its significance cannot be overstated.”
Bill Myers, long time Saugatuck jazz lover, educator, and LJC supporter.
