ABOUT US
Lakeshore Jazz Connection (LJC) started in 1996 as Lakeshore Arts Connection and presented a variety of styles of music, educational workshops as well as Saugatuck High School’s Art a Loan program. In 1999, the name was changed to Lakeshore Jazz Connection to describe its true passion. Between 1999 and 2008, Lakeshore Jazz Connection presented a total of 59 concerts. In 2008, Lakeshore Jazz Connection concluded it's run. In 2024, after selling out several self produced concerts in 2025, locals Chris Raphael, Lance Trexler and Jim Cooper had an epiphany….…Saugatuck needs more jazz. They decided to keep the name and re-apply for non-profit status which they received in September of 2025. Lakeshore Jazz Connection Rides Again!
Lakeshore Jazz Connection's mission is to:
- Present live jazz performances. Whether it's is clubs, restaurants, concert halls, art galleries or open air venues, Lakeshore Jazz Connection is planning a series of performances featuring local and midwest jazz artists.
- Provide educational activities for all ages. Lakeshore Jazz Connection is interested in providing private lessons, clinics, workshops and listening parties for all ages.
- Educate audiences on the history of jazz in the Saugatuck/Douglas area. Teaming up with the Saugatuck Douglas History Center, Lakeshore Jazz Connection plans regular talks on local jazz history dating back from the Big Pavilion in 1909 to the present.
- Create a scholarship fund for music students. Talented music students will be given the chance to apply for funds for free private or class lessons on an instrument/voice, jazz improvisation or composition.
Whether it's presenting performances in a variety of venues, offering educational opportunities for all ages, teaching local jazz history or providing scholarships that encourage students to develop their talents and pursue their dreams, Lakeshore Jazz Connection is dedicated to keeping the love of jazz alive and well throughout our area and across generations.
